ALWAGHT- A Russian official in Iran said Moscow is exploring the construction of small nuclear plants to supply electricity to remote regions.
Alexander Efimov, Russia’s temporary trade representative to Iran, said that Russia is exploring the development of small nuclear power plants in Iran to provide reliable and environmentally friendly electricity for remote regions and industrial clusters that do not require large-scale facilities. He described this approach as a growing and practical solution for areas with specific energy needs.
Iran already operates the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which was built with Russian assistance, and the first unit was connected to the national grid in 2011. Construction of the second phase, adding two more units, is currently underway, continuing the collaboration between the two countries.
In September 2025, Iran and Russia signed a $25 billion agreement to build four additional power units in Hormozgan province for the new Hormoz nuclear plant. They also signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on the development of small nuclear plants across Iran.
