ALWAGHT- The arrival of the US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 12, headed by the supercarrier USS Gerald Ford, at Souda Bay has triggered anti-war demonstrations on the Greek island of Crete.
Several hundred protesters gathered in the port city of Chania, Crete, to oppose what they described as a provocative escalation in US military policy in West Asia. The largely peaceful rally, backed by the Greek Communist Party and other left-wing groups, featured placards condemning American military actions.
The protest followed the arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford and Carrier Strike Group 12 at the US naval base in Souda Bay, ahead of its redeployment to West Asia as part of a broader US military buildup. Washington has recently expanded its naval and air presence near Iran, increasing deployments and conducting repeated military exercises in the region.
The deployment coincides with renewed indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in Geneva. Iran has warned that any military attack would trigger a decisive response, with senior officials stressing that US bases and assets in the region would be immediate targets if hostilities erupt.
