Ghalibaf: Regional States Seek Independent Security Order Beyond US Influence

ALWAGHT- Iran’s Parliament Speaker says regional countries are exploring new security and economic arrangements amid growing doubts over dependence on the United States.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran has received messages from neighboring countries seeking new political, economic, and security arrangements. He argued that the recent US-Israeli war on Iran has exposed the risks of relying on Washington as the region’s main security guarantor.

Ghalibaf said US policies had placed even Washington’s allies at risk by prioritizing Israeli interests. He called for a “homegrown, independent order” in which regional states take greater responsibility for their own security rather than depending on outside military powers.

The remarks come as Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan have established a joint defense framework, while Saudi Arabia is also pursuing a multinational maritime security coalition. These initiatives suggest that regional governments are increasingly diversifying their security partnerships amid doubts about the reliability of the US security umbrella.

Iran is meanwhile working with Oman on a proposed arrangement for managing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The framework reportedly involves separate transit routes and mechanisms for navigation, security, and environmental services, though negotiations are still ongoing.

Ghalibaf has also promoted greater regional cooperation during his recent visit to Iraq, including expanded trade and security ties. While the emerging initiatives do not constitute a unified regional bloc and some are not aligned with Iran, they point toward a more fragmented security landscape in which states are seeking alternatives to exclusive reliance on Washington.
